One of the major requirements of a filter press is to achieve a relatively high pressure at the end of the cylinder stroke.

The pressure and resulting force are required at the end of the cylinder stroke (press closure) to assure that the force generated by the low pressure (diaphragm) pump, which pumps the sludge to be filtered on the large area filter elements or plates, does not separate the filter elements during the filter operation. This provides a very effective use for an air driven liquid pump.

There are a large number of filter press manufacturers, many use electrical pumps for this purpose but more and more are changing over to air driven pumps.
